A great and warlike tribe of Arabia in the days of Muhammad, who dwelt between Makkah and at-Ta’if. Muhammad defeated them at the battle of Hunain, A.H. 8, a victory which in the Qur’an, Surah ix. 26, is ascribed to angelic aid. (See Muir’s Life of Mahomet, new ed. p. 432.
