Surah ii. 257: "Whoso disbelieves in Taghut and believes in God, he has got a firm handle, in which is no breaking off." Surah ii. 259: "But those who misbelieve their patrons are Taghut, these bring then forth to darkness." Jalalu 'd-din says Taghut was an idol of the Quraish, whom certain renegade Jew honoured in order to please the tribe.
